"I feel like I can't get a deep breath."
If we had a dollar for every time we heard that… we'd probably be writing this from a beach somewhere. Instead, I'm writing it from the studio, because this conversation comes up almost every single day.
Someone sits down and tells me they feel like they're constantly chasing a deep breath. They're yawning all day. Sighing. Taking these huge breaths every few minutes because they just can't seem to get one that feels satisfying.
Then they tell us something that always catches our attention.
"My oxygen is fine."
Exactly. So if your oxygen is normal… why do you still feel like you can't breathe?
We blame oxygen for almost everything
Most of us grew up believing breathing is all about oxygen. Take a bigger breath. Get more oxygen. Feel better. Makes sense, right?
Except that's not really how your body works. The truth is, your body is paying just as much attention to carbon dioxide as it is to oxygen. Maybe even more than you realize.
Poor carbon dioxide gets treated like the bad guy. We're told we need to get rid of it. Breathe it out. Flush it away. But without it…
You wouldn't breathe normally. Your blood wouldn't release oxygen efficiently to your muscles and tissues. Your brain wouldn't know when to tell you to take your next breath.
Carbon dioxide isn't just something your body gets rid of. It's one of the ways your body communicates with itself.
So why do you feel like you need more air?
Here's where it gets interesting.
That feeling of not getting enough air… it doesn't always mean you're low on oxygen. Sometimes it means your brain has become very sensitive to the changes happening in your breathing.
It notices carbon dioxide starting to rise. It notices your breathing becoming a little harder. It notices a mismatch between what it expects and what's actually happening.
Then it sends you a message. Breathe.
The problem is… sometimes that message comes long before you're actually in danger.
Meet your body's smoke alarm
I like to think of it like the smoke alarm in your kitchen. If you've ever burnt toast, you know exactly what I mean. The alarm goes off. The house isn't on fire. But the alarm doesn't know that. It's just doing its job.
Your breathing works the same way.
Inside your body are tiny sensors called chemoreceptors. Their job is to constantly monitor changes in your blood, especially carbon dioxide. Most of the time they're incredibly good at keeping everything balanced.
But sometimes… they become a little too sensitive. The alarm goes off early. You feel air hunger. You take a big breath. Maybe another. Then another.
Not because you're running out of oxygen. Because your brain thinks you need to breathe more.
The trap
This is where people accidentally make things worse.
They start chasing the perfect breath. Big inhale. Big sigh. Another deep breath. For a moment… it feels better. Then a minute later… they're doing it again.
It's like scratching a mosquito bite. It helps for a second. Then it comes right back.
The more you chase the feeling of a satisfying breath… the more your brain starts looking for one.
This is why we train CO₂ tolerance
When people hear "CO₂ tolerance," they often think, "So… I'm supposed to hold my breath?"
Not exactly.
CO₂ tolerance isn't about proving how long you can go without breathing. It's about teaching your brain that a small rise in carbon dioxide isn't an emergency. That it's safe. That you don't need to panic every time you feel a little air hunger.
Over time, your breathing becomes quieter. Less effort. Less urgency. You stop chasing breaths. And your body starts trusting itself again.
What we see in the studio
The biggest change isn't that someone suddenly has a higher CO₂ tolerance.
It's that they stop thinking about their breathing all day. They stop sighing every few minutes. They stop yawning constantly. They stop feeling like they have to fill their lungs to 100% with every breath.
They just… breathe.
And honestly, that's the goal. Healthy breathing shouldn't demand your attention every five minutes. It should quietly do its job while you get on with living your life.
What the research says
Research over the last two decades has shown that the uncomfortable feeling of air hunger is influenced by much more than oxygen levels. Carbon dioxide, the sensitivity of your chemoreceptors, and the way your brain interprets those signals all play a major role in the urge to breathe.
This helps explain why someone can have completely normal oxygen levels and still feel like they "can't get enough air."
So what should you do?
The next time you catch yourself thinking, "I need a bigger breath," pause for a second. Ask yourself…
Do I actually need more air? Or has my brain simply become really good at convincing me that I do?
Sometimes the answer isn't to breathe more. Sometimes it's to trust your body enough to breathe a little less. Softly. Quietly. Without forcing it.
Because breathing better isn't about taking bigger breaths. It's about teaching your nervous system that every single breath doesn't have to feel like an emergency.
